AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference and Do You Need Both?

SEO gets you ranked on Google. AEO gets you cited by AI assistants. They overlap, but they're not the same game. Here's how they differ and where to put your effort.

AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference and Do You Need Both?

SEO is optimizing to rank on search engines. AEO, answer engine optimization, is optimizing to get cited by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. They share a foundation, which is why people conflate them, but the goal and the winning move are different. Here's the clean distinction and how to split your effort.

The core difference

SEO wins a position. The goal is a high rank on a results page so a human clicks through. Success is measured in rankings, clicks, and traffic.

AEO wins a citation. The goal is to be one of the handful of sources an AI assistant reads and quotes when it answers a question. There's no ranked list, it's in-or-out, and success is measured in whether you're cited, not where you place.

The tell: SEO optimizes for the click, AEO optimizes for the mention that may never produce a click at all, because the user got their answer inside the assistant.

Where they overlap

A lot, at the foundation. Both reward:

  • Fast, clean, server-rendered pages.
  • Clear structure and semantic headings.
  • Structured data that spells out what your page says.
  • Being indexed and trusted.

Do the technical fundamentals well and you're helping both at once. This is why "should I do SEO or AEO?" is usually a false choice, most of the groundwork is shared.

Where they diverge

The differences are worth knowing:

  • Which index matters. Classic SEO is a Google game. AEO leans heavily on Bing, because that's the index ChatGPT and others read. Fast Bing indexing via IndexNow matters far more for AEO than for Google SEO.
  • What you optimize on the page. SEO tunes titles and keyword coverage for a ranking algorithm. AEO writes direct, quotable, corroborated claims a model can lift.
  • How you measure. SEO watches rankings and clicks. AEO watches whether assistants cite you.

Do you need both?

For now, yes, and it's cheaper than it sounds because the base is shared. Google still drives the majority of discovery, so SEO isn't going anywhere. But the share of questions answered inside an assistant is climbing, and being invisible there is a growing cost. Nail the shared fundamentals, then add the AEO-specific moves (fast Bing indexing, quotable claims) on top.
