Add the BrightSite app in ChatGPT and have it work on your site. No API key needed.

BrightSite has a ChatGPT app. Once you add it, you can ask ChatGPT to build pages, write and publish posts, check your analytics and fix links on your site, in the same conversation where you do everything else.

What you need

A ChatGPT account that can use apps, and an active BrightSite subscription on the account you want to work on. Accounts with a lapsed, paused or ended subscription are refused, and ChatGPT will tell you why.

You do not need an API key for this. The app signs you in through your browser instead, which is both simpler and safer. There is no long-lived secret sitting in a config file, and you can disconnect it later without disturbing anything else.

Adding the app

  1. Open ChatGPT and go to your settings.
  2. Find the apps and connectors section.
  3. Search for BrightSite.
  4. Choose it and confirm when ChatGPT asks whether to connect.
  5. A BrightSite page opens in your browser. Sign in if you are not already, and approve the connection.

You are returned to ChatGPT, connected. Nothing is copied and pasted at any point.

If you cannot find the app by searching, check that your ChatGPT plan includes apps. The feature is not on every tier, and the search returns nothing rather than explaining why.

The first thing to ask for

This trips up nearly everyone on their first try. Every BrightSite action needs to know which account you mean, and ChatGPT cannot guess. Before anything else, ask it to list them:

List my BrightSite accounts.

You get back each account you belong to, with its id. From then on ChatGPT can work out which one you mean from the name alone, so you can say "update the homepage on Riverside Dental" and it will resolve the rest.

Skip this and your first real request fails with an error about a missing account id.

Check it worked

Ask for something that only reads:

List my BrightSite accounts, then show me the pages on the first one.

Real account names and real page titles coming back means you are connected properly.

Approving changes

ChatGPT asks before it does anything that writes to your site, and shows you what it is about to do. Read those prompts rather than approving on autopilot, particularly anything that publishes or deletes.

This matters more than it does with Lumi. Lumi works inside BrightSite and stages its changes for you to review; an outside tool acts directly, so the approval prompt is your checkpoint. See Working safely with AI.

What it costs

Nothing on the BrightSite side. Work you do through ChatGPT is paid for by your ChatGPT subscription, and does not draw on your organization's AI wallet. The wallet only pays for Lumi, inside BrightSite. See Topping up AI credits.

If it does not work

Check your ChatGPT plan includes apps. If it does and the app still does not appear, the search may not have caught up yet; try again shortly.

You are asked to sign in repeatedly

Let the browser finish returning to ChatGPT before switching away from it. If it keeps looping, disconnect the app in ChatGPT's settings and add it again.

An account is missing from the list

You are not a member of it. Ask its owner to invite you. See Roles and permissions.

ChatGPT says it is not allowed to do something

The connection can do exactly what your BrightSite role allows, no more. If you are a viewer, it can read your site but not publish it. That is deliberate. Ask an admin to change your role if you need more.

Everything worked, then requests start failing

There is a rate limit, which normal conversation will not reach but a bulk job can. Wait a minute and carry on, or break large jobs into smaller batches.

Disconnecting

Remove the app from ChatGPT's settings, in the same place you added it. Access stops immediately. Because you connected by signing in rather than with a key, there is nothing else to clean up afterwards.
